Besides the extraordinary bird diversity, Poda shelters the only mixed colony along the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast of the Eurasian Spoonbill, Glossy Ibis, Pygmy Cormorant, Night, Purple, Grey and Squacco Herons and Little Egret.

The international importance of Poda is recognised by its designation as an Important Bird Area, Natura 2000 Site and Ramsar Site. Poda Lagoon was declared as Protected Site in 1989 and under proposal of the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds / BirdLife Bulgaria (BSPB). And it was oficially assigned to BSPB for management.

Hides in the area

Photohides, Water bird photography hide - Poda lagoon

In 2015 NatureTravel in partnership with BSPB create stationary photo hide for photographing birds and nesting platform in the water. That same year on the construction of the platform first we had 17 pairs of Terns.

Photo hide offers all the convenience needs of photographers, including photographing from water level which is most importnat for clear and blurr background. Photographers available soft mattresses that are comfortable photographing from a lying position and chairs with adjustable height.

 

Landscape and biodiversity

BSPB efforts in preserving Poda were acknowledged by the first for Bulgaria National Award of the Henry Ford Conservation Awards and by the Diploma of the Association of the German Tour Operators. 
Poda Protected Site is one of the very few sites in Europe, where 273 bird species have been recorded at just 1 square kilometer.

The Protected Site is situated near to the southern edge of Burgas, to the North of Kraymorie Estate and to the East of the road from Burgas to Sozopol (E87).
